Detection reed switch

With a digital model railway, train detection (block signaling) is an important function. Most often current sensing is used. It is quite reliable and you don't have any (possibly ugly and always non-prototypical) sensors in view. The drawback is that it probably also is the most expensive method.

Two trains photosensors

Now that we can control 1 train with arduino, it's time to add a second one. We made a track where the two trains share a part of the track, but also each have an individual part of the track. In this case we can let a train wait on his own track, while the other train uses the shared part of the track. How do we know when the other train can start? We will be using photosensors for this.

FreeTrackPlans

FreeTrackPlans.com - the home of model railway layout plans. There are 400 designs ranging from small branch line stations to cement terminals and even large city termini, perfect for your Hornby, Bachmann and Heljan trains to run on!
Most plans have been designed using HO/OO gauge set-track with some sections of flexible track. Many of the designs have first radius curves that will not be suitable for all types of rolling stock. However, the ideas here can be developed further using other types of track, provided that you have the space to accommodate larger radius curves and pointwork.

Plans on this site have been designed using AnyRail track planning software, available from www.anyrail.com. The files used to make the plans can be found on the download page, meaning you can view the required parts and adjust them for your own requirements. Plans could also be adapted in Anyrail for other scales including N gauge and TT gauge.

This site has been set up to provide inspiration for those planning a model railway, whether it’s a simple train set or a complex model railroad with several trains running at once. Most of the plans are based on prototype locations, and are designed to give a feel of the location instead of copying every single detail. The accuracy of the track plans will therefore vary, but with some careful scenic work they have the potential to be modelled and recognised as a specific location.

A Windows simulation

I'm delighted to say that there is a free simulator of the Arduino Uno out there! Anyone with a Windows computer can "play with" an Arduino. Teachers can show one to pupils, and let pupils play with it. No expense. No "barrier to entry" in the form of mastering the fiddly bits of hooking up hardware. No danger of damage to equipment. This splendid, major, contribution to us all comes from Stan Simmons, formerly of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. And is now very mature, having been refined for years.

Building a Model Railway

Once you've laid the track it's very tempting to just jump in and start ballasting. However there are loads of little details you need to work on before that can happen. In this video I start work on the details and also get some ballasting done.
